HM Naval Base Portsmouth

HM Naval Base Portsmouth

As part of the Royal Navy's investment in HM Naval Base Portsmouth, which has also seen the delivery of two new Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers to the base, G&T has been involved in various projects including a new heavy lift gantry crane, a new CHP energy centre and the external renovation of a Listed accommodation block known as The Parade.

14 Dock Crane

The new heavy lift gantry crane at 14 Dock replaces three previous rail cranes and is capable of lifting up to 30 tonnes. It has made a significant change to the dockyard skyline, reaching 68m above 14 Dock and includes a cantilever section which is able to serve the adjacent 15 Dock.

New CHP Energy Centre

Featuring three reciprocating gas engines rating at 4.5MWe CHP plant will generate electricity and heat, reduce carbon emissions and is targeted to save the Ministry of Defence up to £4million per year in energy costs. Steam will be recovered from the CHP exhaust to provide space heating and the electricity generated will be used to power the onsite infrastructure, increasing the power capacity available at the Naval Base. In the event of a mains failure at site, the engines are capable of Island Mode operation, providing mission critical power and maintaining security of power supply.

The Parade

Works were undertaken to this three-storey Grade II* Listed building of national importance to secure its stability and weather-tightness. Stabilisation works including timber roof repairs, new slate roof coverings and lead gutters, timber sash window repairs/replacement, localised brickwork and render repairs as well as rebuilding and repairs to the front porches.
