Edinburgh Biomes

Edinburgh Biomes

The Edinburgh Biomes project will restore, redevelop and improve RBGE’s key infrastructure to protect its unique plant collection for the future. Undertaken across two sites at Inverleith, the project is the most significant in the garden’s 350-year history.

Extensive refurbishment of the Category A Listed Victorian Palm Houses, 1960s modernist Front Range and research Glasshouses will ensure the long term preservation of plant species, endangered or extinct in their natural habitats. The addition of a new Glasshouse beside the Front Range will enhance the visitor experience.

At the Nursery site a new plant health hub will provide a safe bio-secure propagation environment and a new sustainable energy centre will use ground source heat pumps to heat the entire site.

Further works include extensive hard landscaping, demolition and relocation.
