The Hospital Sterilisation & Decontamination Unit (HSDU) will provide a medical device decontamination and sterilisation service to healthcare facilities across the ABUHB region.

It comprises a purpose-built two-storey facility for the reprocessing of re-usable medical devices including the dismantling, cleaning and decontamination of devices as well as identifying, inspecting and testing the functionality of surgical instruments. The unit will also provide for the re-assembling and packing of instruments together with sterilising items in porous load or gas plasma steriliser and packaging for distribution to hospitals.

The ground floor has been designed to receive the contaminated items via a vehicular entrance and then dismantle, clean, sterilise and repackage for collection via a second vehicle bay. Plant to service this specialist equipment is located on the first floor.
