Westmuir Street School

Parkhead School

Situated within a conservation area, the former Category B Listed Parkhead School has been transformed into an enterprise centre for the local community.

The vacant Victorian building was in a significant state of disrepair. A partial roof collapse had resulted in extensive timber decay and major structural damage. Externally the building had been subject to cement render repairs which have accelerated masonry decay.

Extensive repairs and restoration works, including sympathetic internal interventions, were undertaken to the Victorian building. Two standalone ‘Boys School’ and ‘Girls School’ blocks were linked together with a new glazed atrium and the building includes an enterprise facility offering a mix of office accommodation and flexible community space.

Glasgow Building Preservation Trust (GBPT) acted as lead developer in partnership with Glasgow City Council (GCC) and Parkhead Housing Association (PHA) to create a much-needed local community hub. The restoration of the building was the culmination of the Parkhead Cross Conservation Area Renewal Scheme funded by Historic Environment Scotland, National Lottery Heritage Fund and GCC.
