The German School

The German School - Sports Hall Development

New sports hall development providing competition sized courts for handball, fusball, volleyball, badminton and basketball.

The existing building was demolished to make way for a main sports hall as well as a second hall for dance, martial arts, gymnastics and general primary school PE. As the new development is in a Conservation Area, a development strategy, justification exercise and Heritage statement was undertaken to demonstrate the merits of demolishing the existing sports building to the Local Planning Authority.

The new building's flexible design allows three classes to be taught PE at the same time, with the addition of acoustic drop screens to divide the hall into three equal playing spaces. Bleacher seating has also been provided for spectators and assemblies.

The project was undertaken while maintaining access to the existing building, without compromising the safety of pupils as well as maintaining service provision in an existing plant room which was eventually incorporated into the new building envelope.
