Low Carbon Energy Generation Project
Keele University's Low Carbon Energy Generation project will consist of a 5.5MW solar farm, two wind turbines totalling 1.8MW and a 1MW battery storage system. The project will support the university's target to be carbon neutral by 2030.
The Low Carbon Project will reduce the university's reliance on fossil fuels and provide substantial carbon savings across the 600 acre estate which includes 350 buildings for 10,000 students and 2,000 staff. Plans are for the generation sites to be producing electricity in 2021.
The Keele University Smart Energy Network Demonstrator (SEND), a European first, is an at scale environment providing a platform that allows energy generation, distribution, storage, forecasting and energy balancing to be intelligently carried out across different energy sources using the Keele University campus as a genuine "living laboratory".
