G&T Overs Unders Football

By Joe Halstead

On a Spring evening, representatives of the younger side of the business locked horns with their more experienced colleagues in the annual ‘Over 30s v Under 30s’ football match.

A tough contest was expected with the Overs fielding a number of players who have recently turned 30 and the Unders hindered by a couple of players who won’t be missed when they hit their next milestone.

Kick-off was delayed due to the late arrival of a number of the Overs.  It has yet to be confirmed whether this was due to “tube delays” (which didn’t seem to hamper the Unders) or whether they knew the pitch was only booked for 90 minutes and so the later they were, the less running around they would have to do.

The game kicked off and the Overs were quickly into their stride creating a number of early chances.  However, the younger side eventually broke the deadlock just before half-time with Khaleel Katchi (a recent signing from G&T Bristol) rounding the goalkeeper and slotting home.

The Overs headed out for the second half determined to get back into the game but were left to rue their missed chances as an Unders’ counter-attack resulted in Kevin Newton taking advantage of a miscommunication at the back to make it two goals in his last two ‘Overs-Unders’ games.

However the Overs weren’t done yet – a Michael Tilley free-kick was tipped onto the bar before the pressure finally paid off and David Adams bundled the ball over the line following a goalmouth scramble.

Another breakaway attack found Tom Cannon in space who lashed the ball home, breaking his G&T scoring duck.  At 3-1 it seemed like the game was done and dusted but yet another Overs free-kick was whipped in, this time diverting off Craig Chatley’s face into the corner of the net.

At 3-2 the Overs heaped the pressure on, trying to make use of their height (and weight) advantage.  However, they couldn’t find the equaliser and the Unders held on for a 3-2 victory.
